My son was arrested last night in Hayward. His father and I have been looking online and it seems as if we need to pay 10%of that to get him out of jail. I also think that if we cosign the paperwork we’ll be responsible for making sure he goes to court. Is there anything we’re missing? We’ve never done this before and want to make sure we know what we’re getting ourselves into.
You are correct. In order to hire bondsman to get your son out of jail you will need to pay a fee equal to 10% of your son’s total bail amount to purchase a bond. You will also want to keep in mind that the fee you pay to a bondsman in Alameda County is nonrefundable, regardless as to the outcome of his case. If you want to get your money back you would need to take his full bail amount to the court or jail in cash. As long as your son does what he needs to do to complete his case that money would be returned once the matter is concluded.
When you cosign for a bond you are also taking responsibility that he will make all of is necessary court appearances. If he misses court you and the bondsman would have six months to get him back into the system. If this cannot be accomplished you would need to pay his full bail amount to the court as a penalty.
