A common misconception when it comes to arranging bail bonds for someone arrested by the Berkeley Police Department is that the person who cosigns the bail contract will always be required to post collateral. This is not always the case. While there are certainly a number of bondsmen that always require some form of collateral be posted, there are bail agents in Berkeley who deal mostly in signature bonds. For this type of bond the signature of the person who signs the contract is promise enough the defendant will appear in court.
If you are required to post collateral most agents will ask you post an item valued at 150% of the defedant’s total bail amount. If their bail has been set at $20,000 you may be asked to post something that has a value of $30,000. As long as the defendant goes to court and handles their case, that item will be returned to the person who posted it once their case is over.
If you have been notified that someone you care for has been arrested and taken to the Santa Rita Jail and you are interested in learning if you are eligible for a signature bond, be sure to ask the agent you’re speaking with if this is a service they are are able to provide.
