Investigators within the Alameda Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that a deputy was critically wounded over the weekend. His name has not been released.
The incident unfolded as a result of what should have been a routine traffic stop. The driver and the passenger of the vehicle were found to be in possession of illegal drugs. The deputy asked both individuals to exit the vehicle and had the intention of taking both suspects into custody. At some point the car sped away. The deputy was dragged along the ground for an unknown distance. Either the driver or the passenger then fired shots. The deputy returned fire. Investigators reportedly said the vehicle crashed into a building a short distance away.
One of the suspect sustained life threatening injuries. He died in Highland Hospital several days later. The Alameda Sheriff’s Department deputy remains under medical supervision. He sustained a gunshot wound to one of his feet. Doctors anticipate he will make a full recovery.
The second person in the vehicle was injured but his injuries were not critical.
Jail officials have not indicated whether the second suspect is being held at the San Jose Jail. Additional information has not been made public.
The matter is currently under investigation by the Oakland Police Department.
