Some members of the Berkeley Police Department wonder why officers in neighboring communities have been granted permission to carry Tasers and why the topic hasn’t been addressed within the BPD.
Some believe that allowing officers to carry this type of device could allow unruly, dangerous and uncooperative suspects to be better detained through a non-lethal use of force. Tasers, also called stun guns, administer volts of electricity to a suspect and causes them to hit the ground. They also cause uncontrollable muscle contractions,
Not everyone agrees with their use. Some groups point out that stun guns can be lethal for those who have heart conditions, persons who have pace makers, or persons who are intoxicated or high on drugs. Others refute those reports and point to other studies that show the devices do not pose a threat.
Berkely Police officials reportedly said that while there is no immediate plan for the department to buy Tasers they are simply asking the conversation to be brought to the table. They have also pointed out they would need approval from the City Council prior to moving forward with this type of purchase. Council members said they are open to discussing the matter but have not indicated whether they would allow the measure to pass.
