A spokesperson from the Livermore Police Department has said that thieves are targeting packages being left outside local residences. Many people have taken to shopping online for gifts, they said, and this has led to an uptick in the number of packages being delivered to homes. If no one is there at the time of the delivery these items are often left on the doorstep. This has led to an uptick in theft.
Members of the Livermore PD have said this type of trend is not unique to their community. These types of instances, they said, increase nationally during the holidays. They reportedly recommend the following precautions be taken in order to help prevent becoming a victim of mail theft.
If you are sending a parcel to someone be sure to hold onto tracking information. Require a signature be required upon delivery. If you are able to have items sent to an office or your place of work, this should also be considered. If you receive a notice a delivery driver has attempted to drop something off you can also request they hold it at their facility until you can pick it up. Lastly, it may be wise to ask friends or neighbors to retrieve packages from outside your home if you will not be home when they arrive.
