A Newark man is being held at the Santa Rita Jail and is being charged with multiple felony counts including illegal possession of a fire arm by a felon, carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of illegal ammunition and attempted murder. His bail has been set at $490,000.
The man in question, 22 year-old Anthony Bernal is reported to have assaulted a former Newark Memorial High School Student and another victim during a 2010 house party. The first victim was identified as being Justice Afoa. The second remains unnamed although there are reports this person was transported to a local hospital and was treated for severe stab wounds.
A spokesperson for the Newark Police Department said Afoa was murdered on a busy street just two months later. Responding officers found Afoa stabbed multiple times. The injuries proved to be fatal.
Bernal is being charged with the murder. Authorities said they have not ruled out additional arrests and have indicated defendant Bernal could face additional charges. At the current time three other suspects, Rafel Tovar, Daniela Guzman and Daniel Howard, have also been taken into custody. Those individuals are being held at the Santa Rita Jail and have no bail holds. Defendants Tovar, Guzman and Howard are known associates of Norento gangs.
Bernal is scheduled to be arraigned on January 7. The other three are set to be arraigned on January 9. Police have asked that anyone who might have information about the crime call 510-578-4965. Tips can remain anonymous.
