Sources within the Oakland Police Department have confirmed that a van that contained roughly 400 in rare books has been stolen. A suspect has been booked at the Santa Rita Jail on $130,000 bail bonds.
The incident took place in mid-February, according to a report by the Contra Costa Times; the incident is being investigated by both the Oakland Police Department and the Berkeley Police Department. The owner of the books, who is listed as being a rare book dealer from Chicago, said he drove his van up to Oakland so he could attend a weekend show.
He parked his van outside his friends house that night, he said, but when he walked outside the following morning, the van, and the books, were gone.
The victim said that none of the books were insured. Oakland PD officials said they were able to arrest a suspect after they received a tip that an unknown male was trying to sell the books to a local dealer. Although several of the high-value titles have been recovered, most are still unaccounted for.
