In the past several years the Oakland Police Department has had a number of challenges. Their number of sworn staff has decreased by approximately 25 percent since 2008. They just finally started running police academy training classes. Crime rates have skyrocketed. The department is currently on its third police chief in the past two months. The most recent resigned from his post just two days after accepting the job.
Some members of the Oakland Police Department said they are focusing on working smarter, not harder. They have begun to modify how they police and fight crime. This switch helped them arrest two suspected robbers last Friday. Officers feel this could just be the tip of the iceberg. If they continue to partner with other agencies and make well-planned arrests they could put a bigger dent in the overall crime rate.
A few of the recently arrested men are believed to be part of a larger city-wide robbery ring. At the time they were taken into custody officers confiscated two firearms. If this crime ring can be broken up, they said, it could help reduce the number of robberies that are taking place throughout Oakland.
A spokesperson for the Oakland PD reportedly said the department will continue to set up surveillance and monitor things that are going on in city neighborhoods. They are confident that a small group of people are responsible a large number of recent crimes. Anyone who believes they might have additional information that could lead to an arrest or conviction is asked to place an anonymous tip.
