Booking Process & Jail Information
When someone is arrested in Alameda County, they will initially be taken to the Intake and Release Center at 425 7th Street for booking.
During the booking process, the defendant will be fingerprinted and photographed and a background check and warrant search will be done. Within a few hours, they will be transported to either the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility or the Santa Rita Jail.
Once bail has been posted or the judge allows for their release, the defendant will be transported back to the Intake and Release Center.
The lobby of the jail is open 24-hours a day in case you need to bring any medical supplies for an inmate. Bail may also be posted in the lobby if you are not going through a bail bondsman.

How Bail is Set
Bail amounts in California are set for each county individually. Alameda County judges are responsible for setting the “bail schedule” and making any changes on an annual basis.
The bail schedule lists every type of criminal charge with a corresponding bail amount. Jailers simply refer to the schedule to determine a bail amount.
California and Alameda bail amounts are some of the highest in the nation. Several factors go into deciding a defendant’s bail.
- The top priority is always public safety. If the defendant could be a threat to society, then a higher bail amount will be set.
- The severity of the alleged crime also plays a role.
- Flight risk is also a factor. If there is reason to believe that the defendant will try to avoid coming back to court, then a higher bail amount could be given.
